Negro Prison Songs from the Mississippi State Penitentiary Recorded by Alan Lomax - Alan Lomax. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. A collection of songs recorded at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in 1947. The best single document of the African American work song and field holler tradition. These songs belong to the musical tradition which Africans brought to the New World, but they are also as American as the Mississippi River. They were born out of the very rock and earth of this country, as black hands broke the soil, moved, reformed it, and rivers of stinging sweat poured upon the land under the blazing heat of Southern skies, and are mounted upon the passion that this struggle with nature brought forth. Negro Prison Songs from the Mississippi State Penitentiary Remastered. Various Artists. 5 out of 5 stars 2. Audio CD. The indefatigable Alan Lomax re-visited the Mississippi State Penitentiary, Parchman, in May 1947, twelve years after he had first recorded the prisoners' singing, accompanied by his father John Lomax. Alan Lomax was funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship. He discovered that many of the old song forms had died out, but he still found several powerful performers. It is hard to do justice to how many much marvelous music Lomax managed to capture, lugging heavy recording machines into hostile prisons. Mississippi State Penitentiary MSP, also known as Parchman Farm, is a maximum-security prison farm located in unincorporated Sunflower County, Mississippi, in the Mississippi Delta region. Occupying about 28 square miles 73 km2 of land, Parchman is the only maximum security prison for men in the state of Mississippi, and is the state's oldest prison. Begun with four stockades in 1901, the Mississippi Department of Corrections facility was constructed largely by state prisoners.
