Listen to the album. Among them were Beethoven pupil Carl Czerny, his 11-year-old pupil Franz Liszt, Czerny's teacher Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Mozart's son Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart and Franz Schubert, whose C minor variation must have appeared otherworldly even to listeners at that time. Beethoven: Diabelli-Variationen. Ludwig van Beethoven. 7 out of 5 stars 4. Here you can discover the very first stirrings of Liszt s virtuosity aged 11, the music of Mozart s son, the unexpected variations of Kreutzer and Kalkbrenner, and the 'Diabelli Variation' of a certain Franz Schubert. A thrilling musical investigation with Andreas Staier's own 'Introduction'. My intention with the Introduction was to create a sound-space that separates the twelve preludes , from Czerny to Schubert, from Beethoven s great cycle. Artur Balsam. Artur Balsam, Liszt. Rudolf Buchbinder. The Diabelli Project. Beethoven's 32 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120, have been programmed before with other variations that were published by Diabelli in a two-part volume along with Beethoven's set, and contemporary composers have written new variations on Diabelli's original waltz, but the program of pianist Rudolf Buchbinder's Diabelli Project is unique. Buchbinder offers a three-act sequence beginning with Beethoven's set and concluding with variations from the original Diabelli group, ending with the fine, brilliant coda by Carl Czerny. Even though hearing Ludwig van Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, Op. 120, performed by Andreas Staier on a fortepiano, may be the main selling point of this 2012 release on Harmonia Mundi, it seems to take second place when the CD's curiosities are considered. Liszt, Ignaz Moscheles, Johann Peter Pixis, Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, or Franz Schubert. The 33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120, commonly known as the Diabelli Variations, is a set of variations for the piano written between 1819 and 1823 by Ludwig van Beethoven on a waltz composed by Anton Diabelli. It is often considered to be one of the greatest sets of variations for keyboard along with J. Bach's Goldberg Variations. The music writer Donald Tovey called it the greatest set of variations ever written and pianist Alfred Brendel has described it as the greatest of.
