I would call this recording of Ariadne auf Naxos 'old fashioned' in that it is very slow and delicate and cast with singers who, in the modern world of Strauss performance would be considered under-powered, especially the Ariadne of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and especially the Bacchus of Rudolf Schock. They both sing with great beauty of tone, musicality and precision. At Karajan's leisurely tempos they sound too precise actually, over-rehearsed even, which was a Walter Legge trademark in his technically perfect recordings in the 1950s for EMI. Ariadne auf Naxos Ariadne on Naxos, Op. 60, is an opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von opera's unusual combination of elements of low commedia dell'arte with those of high opera seria points up one of the work's principal themes: the competition between high and low art for the public's attention. The opera was originally conceived as a 30-minute divertissement to be performed at the end of Hofmannsthal's adaptation of Molière's play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. Schwarzkopf as a prima donna, Rita Streich with her note-perfect coloratura as Zerbinetta, and Irmgard Seefried as the youthful and hysterical composer: In 1954 in London, Karajan put together the perfect cast for Strauss and Hofmannsthal's tragicomic opera about opera. The reduced line-up of the Philharmonia Orchestra provide the perfect accompaniment. takt1 GOLD. Richard Strauss. Philharmonia Orchestra. Herbert von Karajan. Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonia play Richard Strauss chamber-like score with great understanding and a real feel for the individual colors needed for each scene. Strauss wanted the intimacy of a solo piano as much as he wanted a full orchestral soundeach has its place hereand no matter which is present the balance is always right Walter Legge produced. Irmgard Seefrieds Composer also may be the finest available, with the voice warm and rich at both ends and with an impetuosity and Romantic spirit that defines the character. Herbert von Karajan leads a glowing, poignant and aptly lighthearted performance. Strauss, a complete musician, excelled as a composer, conductor and pianist. Richard Strauss presents a quandary. For all that sumptuous Romantic afterglow, he has long been suspect for his failure to follow through on the modernist promise of Salome and Elektra, and for his accommodations to the Third Reich
