Notes

30th Anniversary Edition

"Be not afraid;
The isle is full of noises
Sound, and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twanging instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometimes voices"
(Shakespeare)

Lacquers cut directly from original analogue tapes at Whitfield Street.

"We have used the mono version of 'This Will Be Our Year' for this anniversary edition, rather than using the fake stereo that was used on the original Stereo LP CBS LP S63280. All the other recordings were made in stereo."

℗ 1968 except [B3] ℗ 1997 Marquis Enterprises (on sleeve)
℗ 1968 Marquis Music Enterprises (on A-side label)
℗ 1968 except [B3] ℗ 1997 Marquis Music Enterprises (on B-side label)

Info on "This Will Be Our Year" One major problem arose when it came time to mix "This Will Be Our Year" into stereo. The Zombies' original producer Ken Jones, had dubbed live horn parts directly onto the mono mix. With the horns not having been recorded on the multi-track beforehand, a faked stereo mix had to be made of the mono master.

Ok so I have just received a copy of this Big Beat pressing, purchased for £10, not sealed so has been used but is pretty much N/Mint. Everything looks authentic, cover and labels are clear and not “fuzzy”, and it’s the stamped matrix copy. I can confirm that there is no brief whisper during the intro to ‘Changes’, and there are categorically NO horns during ‘TWBOY’!! So definitely is not a mono version for ‘TWBOY’. Overall the sound quality is excellent and it’s a nice quiet vinyl, but as ‘TWBOY’ isn’t mono as advertised on the back of the cover, then surely this cannot be a genuine copy (??). Common sense would suggest a stamped matrix should indicate a true copy as that’s true for 99.9% of stamped original pressings as opposed to their etched bootleg counterparts (etching being easier to fake than stamping), but this certainly throws that theory out of the window......well at least for this version. In any case the copy I have does sound great regardless, and will be a more than adequate substitute until I bag an original mono copy that’s not being trashed and can be picked up for a bargain price.......hopefully a seller at some point doesn’t realise quite what they have and advertises it wrong on eBay....oh and this seller also has an original drag cover of Bowie’s TMWSTW.......what are the odds??!! ;-)

So far on the Zombies O&O thread:https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/zombies-odessey-and-oracle-best-pressing.733452/page-8#post-21181827we have reasoned forth that there exist etched matrix copies from the late 90s, one example has "WIKD 181-A / B" only and an "MA" initial marking standing for Maxwell Anandappa who worked for Damont. Damont also existed between 86 and 2006 before they closed. One way to possibly also identify an early copy is if there are horns on This Will Be Our Year. This likely means that a legit analog source was used but of course its possible to use multiple sources for a record cut.Its all still up in the air on whats good and not. There also exist etched runouts with dotted lines instead of fully etched, those seem to not be of legit sources, and some stamped versions also seem much later and not very good.

Original Big Beat from '97: WIKD 181 A/B (ETCH)Stacked or stamped are later pressings.1969 US Terre Haute pressings are nice if clean.Time of the Zombies is a 2 lp that contains both USA lp's and sounds great.2012(?) Repertoire Mono lp is my go to...Nice.Original Date/CBS $$$$, not worth it for sound alone... IMO

NOTE: The "fake stereo" is actually a stereo mix that sounds good in mono and in stereo. Also, The "real" pressings have etched runouts. The "fake" pressings have stamped runouts.Timothy Honiss .

Billhambone I think you mean the other way around. Machine stamped matrix is legit, hand-etched is counterfeit. I also have both. The more recent pressings available from Amazon are hand etched, and sound like garbage. The 1997 Big Beat is machine stamped and all analog and sounds fantastic. There are people who have hand etched pressings from the 90s that sound great. Its all a big pot of indestinguishable pressings that no one wants to sort.

leonthepro timothyhoniss I was replying to "jimmythemod76" not leonthepro .sorry for the confusion. Leonthepro, I have compared it to the original UK pressing (CBS ‎– S 63280, CBS ‎– 63280, CBS ‎– SPBG 63280) and another copy that I borrowed from a friend. So it sounds better than the original? In my opinion, yes, it sound richer and the vinyl quality and sleeve is great.

timothyhoniss Yep, it is cheaper than the original pressings and sounds great. This pressing seems to be the best recent pressing. All others sound a bit "meh". That answered neither of my 2 questions.

timothyhoniss I have found it to be my favorite pressing of this album. So which pressings have you tried and what does your copies runouts look like, can you share a picture?
FRAY
I have found it to be my favorite pressing of this album.

CBS/Haarlem (and later Record Industry) used stamped runouts. Also I was under the impression that "This Will be Our Year" is mono. There's like no consensus to this and it keeps on changing. lol
Nea
Are you sure about that? It would make more sense that stamped runouts are harder to fake while etched ones are much easier and harder to pinpoint as the actual one. I mean what if there is a counterfeit thats also etched, how do you tell which etching is right?
AnnyMars
Hello sorry to bother you. Is it worth getting this version. Does it play and sound great. Jamie.

timothyhoniss If it is stamped, it is a counterfeit pressing. The real pressings are etched. I know because I have two copies of this pressing, one etched, one stamped. At this point its impossible to know. Ive heard some say stamped and some say etched. Looks like its useless to ask.

The new copies currently in stores appear to be a legit release that is *based on* the 1997 edition. The back cover clearly refers to www.acerecords.co.uk, which I doubt existed in 1997, and Ace Records is selling new copies on their website. Unlikely to be counterfeit, but it'd be great if anyone can find out when these newer copies were produced so we can have a proper discogs entry for it.
Whitesmasher
calluses I stand corrected. That domain was registered before August 1996. However, I still think these new sealed copies that I find in all Toronto record shops surely can’t be NOS from 1997. It must’ve been repressed in recent years, but not sure when. Some of the new ones sound awful though, what matrix runouts does your copy have if it was purchased in late 90s? Need very detailed descriptions please.

this isn't true, the web existed then, plus they say "we are also on the world wide web" which was something that was said back then when the internet was new.

BEWARE! The 1997 Big Beat version has stamped matrix numbers. The version that's being sold on Amazon right now is a counterfeit. It has hand written deadwax numbers, the label fonts are different and everything looks kind of fuzzy. It also sounds dull compared to the all analog version from 1997.

Not true. it is the other way around. The Big Beat version has hand etched runouts and the fake copies have stamped runouts.

Guy says that the stamped sounds bad. Are you sure its the stamped matrix which is the good one?
Obong
If you use common sense, you will realize that a record pressed 20 years ago is still not still being sold as new....
Jark
I bought this shortly after its release, and mine has hand scratched cat. numbers in the dead wax (not stamped). "This Will Be Our Year" has horns, so I guess it is the mono mix? Quality seems good, so perhaps there are multiple Big Beat pressings? Photos of the labels (for the counterfeit) and a separate listing would be useful for ID.
Alsalar
Thanks for the insight...I just saw this copy at the local record store. I'll pass.
Lyrtois
This release, as well as the mono/stereo Big Beat CD, both sound great. If you are seeking this album on vinyl, it's worth noting that at the time of this writing this is the only version in print/still available out of the 3-4 I see in record stores that's cut from analogue tapes.
Mightsinger
Cut from analogue tapes, can't be bad!
Sharpbringer
I wasn't sure about this reissue (Big Beat, UK, 1997) but it sounds really great. It's well balanced and clear. I wish I could compare it with an original issue.
Naa
The notes claim that they're using the mono mix of "This Will Be Our Year" but it really sounds like they found a stereo mix without horns as it's most definitely not mono and doesn't smack of fake stereo.
