Album

African-American composer William Grant Still's signature piece, Symphony No. 1 Afro-American is the only one of his many works that has seldom needed a recording. As such, it is a natural fit for Still's entry in the Naxos American Classics series. John Jeter and the Fort Smith Symphony deserve commendation for doing such an excellent job here. The acoustics at the Arkansas Best Corporation Performing Center in Fort Smith are excellent for recording, and Still's music is captured in a sound that neither swallows it nor serves it up too dryly. Fort Smith Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Jeter I - Land of Peace: 0:00 II - Land of Romance: 12:22 III - Land of Superstition: 19:19 Still' Symphony, also known as Symphony No. 1 Afro-American, is a 1930 composition by William Grant Still, the first symphony written by an African American and performed for a United States audience by a leading orchestra. It was premiered in 1931 by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a symphonic piece for full orchestra, including celeste, harp, and tenor banjo. It combines a fairly traditional symphonic form with blues progressions and rhythms that were characteristic of popular. William Grant Still 1895-1978 Symphony No. 1 Afro-American 1930 In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy 1943 , Africa 1930. The life and career of the African-American composer William Grant Still certainly qualifies as the quintessential American success story. Often referred to as the dean of African-American composers, Still was born in Woodville, Mississippi on 11th May, 1895, to a family of Negro, Indian, Spanish, Irish and Scotch blood. Stills father, the town bandmaster, died when William was three, precipitating a move to Little Rock, Arkansas, where Stills. The Afro-American Symphony Still wrote four symphonies in all was intended as the middle work in a triptych of which Africa is the first item Symphony No. 2 forms the conclusion. At least this work has been recorded more than once, and by major artists Stokowski above all. The banjo-led scherzo has an especially delicious period flavor. Stills music isnt difficult to play.
